Before you enroll in a plan, here are some questions you should ask

Does this plan cover the prescription drugs I take?
Different plans may cover different prescription drugs. Make sure you choose the plan which covers your prescriptions.
Will the drugs covered by this plan change and if so how often?
Plans may change the prescriptions which are covered by the card and consumers may not be able to change plans. Ask before enrolling.
What is the cost for the plan?
The costs of the plans can vary, so comparison shop. No plan may cost more than $30.00 per year.
How much will I save?
Compare the costs and benefits of several cards before you purchase one. Both the costs and benefits may vary widely. Kentucky SHIP has a worksheet for estimating your monthly costs and savings when comparing different discount cards. Call 1-877-293-7447 to obtain one.
Does my pharmacy accept this card?
Be sure to check with your individual pharmacy prior to enrolling in a plan. Do not rely solely on the literature from the discount card plan. You may save more money if you are willing to switch to a different pharmacy.
Am I eligible for the $600 benefit from Medicare to help pay prescription costs?
If your income is below a certain level and you have Medicare Part A and/or Part B, you may qualify. Single seniors whose income is not more than $12,569 (2004) and married seniors whose combined income is not more than $16,862 (2004) may be eligible. Ask before enrolling in the card plan.

Additional tips
- Once enrolled in a plan, you cannot change the plan for the rest of the calendar year.
- Do not drop your current prescription drug coverage or other insurance coverage for a discount card.
- Be sure to compare all of the companies to find the best plan for you.
- Never give out your Medicare number to an unsolicited salesperson or telemarketer who contacts you regarding enrollment. It could be an attempt to gain information for identity theft.
- Be alert for scam companies. Report any suspicious contacts to the Consumer Protection Division of the Kentucky Attorney General's Office at (888) 432-9257.
