Top 10 Veteran-Specific Scams

The below list provides information on the top veteran-specific scams identified by AARP.

Scam: IRS and tax-related scams can vary, but they are likely to include a call from someone pretending to be an employee of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) wanting your personal and financial information or an immediate payment. For veterans, the caller may say they can help you qualify for a reduction in your federal tax liabilities based on your military status or demand payment for unpaid taxes.

Tip: Consult the IRS directly or your tax preparer about questions regarding legitimate military service-related tax exemptions. Know that the IRS will never call, email, text, or use social media to demand payment. The IRS will never call about taxes owed without first having mailed a bill.
