​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​The Kentucky Consum​er Protection Act protects Kentucky from "unfair, false, misleading or deceptive acts or practice in trade or commerce." The Attorney General's Office of Consumer Protection enforces the Act by bringing lawsuits in the public interest to obtain consumer redress and civil penalties in a range of matters including but not limited to automobile sales, telemarketing sales including the Do-Not- Call list, business opportunities, charitable solicitations, debt collection, truth in lending, privacy, recreation and retirement land sales, internet sales, pharmaceutical drugs and for-profit schools. The Office also conducts educational programs to teach consumers, seniors and schoolchildren about their consumer rights, how to avoid being victimized by scam artists and how to be better consumers.

How do I file a complaint?

The Office of Consumer Protection also serves as a clearinghouse for consumer complaints and helps resolve individual citizens' complaints involving consumer transactions. Most of our forms are available online. Download, complete and mail it back to us at the address on the form.

* You may request a complaint form be sent to you by calling our toll free number at 888-432-9257 and selecting option #3. Please leave your name and address and indicate whether your complaint is against a telemarketer, automobile dealer, or other type of business.

How does that Attorney General's Office recover money lost to scams and business disputes?

Mediation services, within the Office of Senior Protection and Mediation, receives written complaints from anyone regarding a scam or a business toward recover or funds lost or a mutual resolution. Nearly 5,500 citizens have asked us for assistance. Since January 2016, nearly $1.1 million has been returned to Kentuckians through our work. This represents a pace roughly of $1,900 per day returned to Kentuckians. The office also notifies and refers consumers to local law enforcement officials and other agencies nationwide when appropriate. Financial loss due to scam solicitations is typically difficult to recover; however, staff have been successful in overcoming these obstacles.
