Drug Investigations Branch
KASPER Enforcement
KBI agents are expert at using the Kentucky All Schedule Prescription Electronic Reporting Act to detect prescription fraud and drug diversion. New applications of KASPER technology are now in place thanks to legislation developed by Attorney General Greg Stumbo and Senator Richard Roeding. Successful investigations are soaring.
Enforcement of Internet Pharmacy Law
Attorney General Greg Stumbo has developed new ways to fight on-line drug dealing. The Kentucky Bureau of Investigation (KBI) has seized more than a million dollars worth of illegal Internet drugs in the last year and a half. Computer savvy pushers deliver drugs from illegal Internet pharmacies to towns across Kentucky. Traditional law enforcement techniques could not shut down this new pill pipeline, so the Attorney General developed innovative techniques to cut off this dangerous new source for illegal narcotics.
Illegal Internet drug shipments typically include highly addictive Hydrocodone tablets and Alprazolam (Xanax) pills. During one bust at a pharmacy in Louisville, KBI agents seized Internet drugs with a street value of $580,000, which included $150,000 worth of anabolic steroids. These steroids are often marketed to young athletes and can cause life threatening medical conditions.
This powerful new approach in controlling drug trafficking was made possible by the Attorney General’s Internet Pharmacy Task Force, which developed laws that forbid the sale and shipment of drugs by unlicensed Internet pharmacies. Drawing together enforcement officials from federal, state and local agencies, the Task Force represents a team approach to drug eradication that is highly effective. The Task Force continues to meet and develop responses to constantly evolving criminal tactics.
