Employment with the Office of the Attorney General

handshake iconThe Personnel Cabinet has launched its new Career Opportunities System (COS). This new system will make applying for state employment much easier. You no longer have to come to our office in Frankfort to turn in your application. Starting today, you can accomplish all of the following on-line 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from the convenience of your own computer:

  • Create, view, and update your state employment application;
  • Create a cover letter and resume as attachments to your application;
  • Search for job openings and apply for vacant positions; and
  • Identify your preferences by job title, salary range, agency, work county, etc. and be notified by e-mail of vacancies which fit your area of interest.

Most positions in state government are covered by the state merit system and you will need to follow the information listed below for that process. Any vacancies listed by the Office of Attorney General will have a contact name and number. Most candidates, interested in a position with OAG, will be looking for positions in the Law series of state governments’ class specifications. The titles and codes for attorney positions are:

  • Staff Attorney I, 9822
  • Staff Attorney II, 9825
  • Staff Attorney III, 9823
  • Staff Atty Manager, 9827
  • Staff Atty Spvsr, 9826

Titles and codes for investigator positions are:

  • Investigator I, 9885
  • Investigator II, 9886
  • Investigator III, 9887
  • Inv. Spvsr., 9888
  • Inv. Manager, 9889

Although most requests are for the positions listed above, the AG’s office does house other positions that may also be posted on the Personnel Cabinet’s website.

Important reminder

You will need to apply for every vacancy you are interested in when it is posted on the Personnel Cabinet’s web site. All jobs are posted for a minimum of 10 days. The Personnel Cabinet will review your application for the position to determine if you are qualified. Your name will not automatically be sent out to an agency on future registers just because you have been approved for that job classification in the past. You MUST apply for each and every position for which you have an interest. In addition, you are no longer restricted to being on 15 registers. You can apply to as many job vacancies for which you qualify. There is no limit.
