FRANKFORT, KY (September 26, 2005) - Attorney General Greg Stumbo announced today the indictment and arrest of a former resident aide of the Communities of Oakwood in Somerset, Kentucky. Gary Mounce, age 44, of Liberty, Kentucky, is accused in the one count indictment with hitting a mentally retarded male resident of the facility with his fists in August of 2004. Numerous allegations of patient abuse have had the Kentucky State Police, Division of Long Term Care (the state agency that regulates facilities like Oakwood) and agents of the Kentucky Bureau of Investigation conducting a far reaching inquiry of the Pulaski County facility.

Attorney General Stumbo said, “I have devoted a team of experienced investigators and prosecutors to examine issues at Oakwood. “We will protect all facility residents who may be at risk”, Stumbo said.

If convicted, Mounce faces up to ten (10) years in prison and a permanent exclusion from working with the elderly or developmentally disabled.

The case is being prosecuted by Mary Cartwright of the Attorney General Medicaid Fraud and Abuse Control Division. It was investigated by KBI Agent William Stewart. Mounce is in custody on a $10,000 full cash bond.
